But Wait! you didn't give me a warning!

Not to long ago I was teaching my computer class and a student was viewing something on youtube that was not allowed in my class.  I should let you know that I fully expect students to be on the internet in my class and I expect them to use youtube to teach themselves certain skills.  @Mattybraps is not one of those things.  So I told him he is banned from youtube for the rest of class and his response was

"Hey but way! You didn't give me a warning."

First of all I didn't know that 11th grade students who are around 16-17 years old need warnings.

Second, I asked myself the question "Have we accustomed ourselves to needing warnings in society?"

So I responded by asking him "If you are robbing a bank do you deserve a warning by the police before they arrest you?"

"FREEZE!  Before I arrest you, you should know that this is wrong and if you stop now you can go"

"Sir! I must warn you that this is a crime and you could be arrested but not right now if you stop!"

The students all laughed and I am pretty sure I was recorded during my rant.  But the point is clear.  We should not need warnings all the time when we already know what we are doing is wrong.  There is a time and place for grace and mercy but there is also a consequence for every action we make both right and wrong.  In this case the student was dumbfounded I had the audacity to ban him from youtube.

Don't believe that you are always entitled to a warning.  Always expect to receive consequences for every action right and wrong.

Be well
